Clinic and Policlinic of Pneumology

The Pulmonary Clinic is specialized in lung disease related to all major breathing disorders. Obstructive disease of the airways such as asthma and chronic obstructive lung disease related to smoking or environmental pollution are diagnosed and treated. Inflammations of the lung leading to fibrosis and to pulmonary hypertension are a major focus of interest and the subject of close interdisciplinary collaborations. Lung cancer and pneumonia are actively taken care of using non invasive and interventional bronchoscopy when required. Patients with breathing disorders are provided with assisted ventilation at home. All known sleep disorders are examined and treated in cooperation with the neurologists.

Chairman and Chief Physician: Prof. L. P. Nicod, MD
Prof. L. P. Nicod has been trained in internal medicine in Lausanne and in pneumology at South-western Medical School in Dallas (U.S.A.). He returned to Switzerland where he joined the staff at the University Hospital of Geneva. In Geneva he was responsible for patients with major disorders requiring ultimately lung transplantation. He is leading the pulmonary Clinic in Bern with major interest in lung defences and lung immunity.

Pascal Meylan, MD,

born 1953 and educated in Lausanne, including medical school.  Early inclination toward microbiology (dealing with clean little things and colourful test tubes).  Got a clinical training in internal medicine and infectious diseases during the eighties, including research projects on bacterial diseases in animal experimental models (pyelonephritis and endocarditis).
From 1988 to 1992, post-doc in San Diego, California.  Met there HIV and Mycobacterium tuberculosis with the challenge of setting up dual infections in human macrophages.  This was an opportunity to realize how poorly immunity against M. tuberculosis was then understood.
In 1992, return to Switzerland. From then on, investigating the role of the induction of apoptosis of infected macrophages in the host defenses against M. tuberculosis. Various research projects related to HIV and growing participation in the diagnosis of viral infections, in particular in relation with solid organ transplant patients (PubMed).
Soemtimes found dreaming in front of a map of Switzerland to his next bike ride.
