Irène Garcia is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Geneva. She obtained her PhD in immunology at the University of Geneva. After a Fellowship at the Pasteur Institute, Paris, she did a postdoctoral work at the Swiss Institute for Experimental Cancer Research (ISREC), Department of Molecular Biology. She was a recipient of the Marie Heim-Vögtlin program and was appointed Associate Professor at the Department of Pathology and Immunology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Geneva. Her research aims to investigate host responses against mycobacterial infections and the mechanisms by which host resistance can be orchestrated and bacilli eliminated. Phagocytic cellular populations producing inflammatory cytokines such as Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) have been a main topic in the laboratory. Identification of cellular sources of TNF and TNF receptors activated by mycobacterial infections and providing resistance or sensitivity to the host is under investigation.
